Meet Dr. Ala Stanford
Dr. Ala Stanford has dedicated her career to advancing health equity, expanding access to care, and empowering underrepresented communities. From founding the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, an initiative that delivered critical testing and healthcare services to underserved neighborhoods in Philadelphia, to opening the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity, she has consistently worked to close gaps in care. Through it all, Dr. Ala Stanford has remained a tireless leader and advocate for affordable, accessible healthcare for all Philadelphians.
First, but not the Last
Born and raised in North Philly and Germantown, Dr. Ala Stanford is Philadelphia through and through — a leader, a fighter, and a champion for our communities. She made history as the first Black woman pediatric surgeon trained entirely in the U.S., and she never forgot where she came from.
When COVID hit, and many Philadelphia neighborhoods were left behind, she didn’t wait, she mobilized. Dr. Stanford founded the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, working directly in the community, in churches, and in rec centers with free testing, vaccines, and compassion. No red tape, no judgment. Just care.
Alongside the Black Doctors Consortium, she founded the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity, a medical center in Philadelphia providing expert health care and improving health outcomes to underserved community members. Later, Dr. Stanford was appointed by former President Biden to serve as the regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of the mid-Atlantic, advocating for families from Philly to West Virginia.
Family & Community
Dr. Stanford is a daughter, sister, wife, and mom to three children, and she has always focused on giving back to her community through the Center for Health Equity and by educating the next generation of leaders at University of Pennsylvania.
Why She’s Running
Now, she’s running for Congress to fight back against Donald Trump’s disastrous policies, whether it’s cuts to health care programs or gutting funding for food programs, education, and affordable housing. Philadelphia needs a champion who will stand up for the support our city deserves – that’s Dr. Ala Stanford.
She’s not a career politician. She’s a pediatric surgeon, a mom, and a proud daughter of Philly — ready to bring real change to the halls of power.
